Money Wise
Hi! I went to this pageant in August of this year because my sister was selected to compete.
Before she was selected we were told there was big fee you have to pay after being selected. You would have to get money from people or get sponsored to be able to have all the money and they say its to pay the pageant for the stage the lights the hotel but you also have to pay separate
For the hotel. The competitions are in a hotel as well. You have to pay so much and once you are in the competition and you get there they are so many other fees.
You have to pay for them train your kid if you wanted to. Why would someone want to do that when they spent so much just to enter and just to get a hotel a dress/other clothing. You have spend on a shirt to do the opening dance when that should be given to you.
You might get prizes and all and won but even after receiving your banners and other future banners cost money too. I saw in there page to buy this banner if you won costed about more than $200 and honestly its a scam money wise other than that it is a real pageant.

Verified ReviewerThey fix who win
We have been to NAM a few times and always had a great time. However, this year, it has changed.
For reference, this is the NAM Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, and one other state I don't remember. Also, certain states are owned by different people so your experience may differ. I was shocked when additional judges were added at the final show, girls competing not in the program, winners without submitted resumes (this is my friend's daughter so I know this from her directly), winners who tripped during formal wear, or botched personal intros. It was clear the winners were chosen before we even competed.
I always believed it was fixed however, my daughters enjoyed it so it was worth it. Now I find out there is a separate selection committee that instructs the judges on who to pick. I am so disappointed NAM was not what I thought it was. Don't be like me and waste your money.
Anyone who tells you different is in the director's circle, or a coach who is someone in their circle or they don't know about the selection committee like me and are just blind. Please don't waste your money.
- Interview skills gained
- It does build public speaking skills
- Pageant winners clearly chosen
- Same girls win multiple times in different years

My daughter participated in this system for 13 years out of her 20 years in pageantry. It's not a scam.
Although she never secured the state title, she always performed well. The skills she learned are invaluable. As for the 'unsolicited' letters... that's because another contestant entered your name on a referral sheet.
I wish there were divisions for older participants. One is never too old to improve speaking skills and confidence.
- Public speaking skills
- Lifelong friends
- Confidence
- Cant win them all
User's recommendation: Definitely do it
My daughter was part of it
I strongly advise against participating in this pageant. It is a profound disappointment and feels like a scam.
Unfortunately, I cannot share images here, but if you could see them, you would truly the issues at hand.
This event does not with the principles of a genuine beauty pageant it's not about showcasing talent or natural beauty; rather, it seems to prioritize favoritism and questionable practices. The entire experience is not only disheartening but also discriminatory, excluding those who do not fit a specific mold.
I implore you to reconsider before investing your time or money.
This pageant perpetuates an environment that undermines the very values it claims to represent. Please protect your daughters from this disappointing reality.
User's recommendation: Beware do not spend your $$
Believe it’s a scam in a way, and they money hungry
My daughter's first year participating cost $650.00 to enter, which doesn't include anything. We still had to pay $35 for a production shirt which should have been included, and the crash course was an extra $25 for them to practice, which should have been free for all.
Three roses cost $20 when we could have gotten them cheaper at the store, and some people even brought their own. The schedule was so jumbled up; the required activities should have been grouped together and the optional ones scheduled afterwards. This is only right, especially for people working and not staying in the hotel. The pajama party could have been better; they could have had snacks or something for the girls, provided lunch especially when they had to be there all day, and discounted parking, which I spent $60 on over three days.
They can do better. I would advise you to ask lots of questions.
Oh, and the optional contest cost $100 or more, and if you're not in any of that, you might not be in the top ten. They're looking for people who spend money.
- Young ladies had fun
- And everything is extra nothing is included in 650
- Cost
Preferred solution: Price reduction

I love National American Miss!
I am preparing for my state pageant and when going to the NAM Website, I stumbled upon this page. I was very shocked to see such a low rating.
A lot of these reviews seem to be from upset parents of children who didn't win. Investing into something and not getting the desired outcome can be frustrating. I've been there. I speak from experience, when you learn more in the losses.
Likewise, I've learned that I don't need a crown to make a difference or serve my community. In fact, I have even earned 3 awards for my volunteerism- including the President's Volunteer Service Award. I didn't recognize the importance of volunteering until my time with NAM. I've learned I can inspire people without a crown.
To the person who said a bald or "fat person" shouldn't win, you are just wrong. As a plus size contestant, I have been given opportunities to speak publicly and give interviews about my experiences as a plus size woman in pageantry. I didn't need a crown for that. I have made so many amazing, beautiful, accomplished friends through NAM.
Girls who are size 2's and size 22's. Girls who have won national and international titles. Girls who won their state pageant first try (without entering optionals might I add) Girls who are still working towards their first title. Girls who have won their state title multiple times.
True genuine friendships. Girls I have traveled cross-country to support, and girls who are traveling cross-country to support me. I am 23 years old and have interviewed for around 6/7 jobs in my lifetime. Whether it was at a local boutique at 16 or at a billion-dollar company for a job I didn't qualify for on paper...
I have gotten every single job I have interviewed for. I thank National American Miss for these life skills. Another thing I see brought up is the financial aspect. I would be lying if I said it was cheap.
I would love to see NAM be more accessible for all girls and women. However, the high production value is unlike any other state pageant - minus Miss USA or Miss America. It is that level. That cost money for the directors.
Renting ballrooms for rehearsals cost money. Hiring judge's cost money. Paying the state titleholder's entry fee to National's cost money. It isn't cheap for them either.
My advice is invest into what invests into you. If you have no aspirations to be an actress, don't enter that optional. If you have no interest in modeling, don't enter the modeling competitions. Optional contests have no bearing on the winner.
Same with coaching. If investing in coaching is what it takes to not only help you get the crown but also further in life, do it. I think I have learned more about "real life" than pageants with my coach. It isn't a scam.
It isn't human trafficking. Yes, it can be expensive. No, you are not promised to win. Yes, they are strict on refunds.
Yes, the letter in the mail is sketchy at first. But just because your child didn't win, or you didn't even give NAM a chance in the first place doesn't mean is an awful company. There is a reason girls come back year after year.
Look at the experience with the perspective of what you gain if you do not win. If you are entering for only the crown the experience isn't for you.
- Building confidence
- Friendships
- Learn who you truly are
- Expensive
Preferred solution: Nothing- leaving a positive review!
User's recommendation: Don't go into NAM with a goal of winning. Go into it to improve interview skills, gain confidence, make friends, or inspire others. It is up to you what you get out of it.

My friend's daughter has been participating in this pageant for years. I did research in the beginning and based on the info I found it is an obvious scam.
The pageant has no mainstream sponsors and it appears that they keep the money flowing in their inner circle because the girls are referred to specific individuals for dresses, shoots, training in runway walking etc. The daughter of the ones who spend the most are more likely to win. Luckily for my goddaughter her mother is a spender so she's won multiple times. I hoped her mom would wake up after spending tens of thousands of dollars, but now her daughter is roped into another of their pageants!
This organization preys on little girls seeking validation and parents who don't know any better. Don't be their next victim.
- Socialization
- Excessive spending and minimal return
Preferred solution: Inform others so they do not have a negative experience.

Such a fabulous pageant system, I really do not understand these complaint comments. No offense most the people who complained probably lost and are speaking before they think! NAM us amazing
Such a great system full of great people. Ive only competed one time last year and will definitely be competing again although a lot of people complained on this website I hope if you wondering about competing in this pageant this comment will let alone convince you it truly is amazing I made 5 new bffs, won most of my optional contests and placed 2nd runner up my first time at NAM and first ever pageant cant wait to go later this year and win!!!

Hi, when is the last day to submit photos for the Yearbook and Photogenic? Please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you.
I received a letter in the mail, addressed to me about mg daughter being selected to enter parent. Well....my daughter is 41, currently in jail for drugs. I truly doubt they picked my daughter .
Unfortunately she has been an addict for the last 20 years. This proves they just randomly pick names from the air. They need to be investigated because I read the reviews and there is a lot of criminal activity going on with other people's money.
Preferred solution: No. They're no different than any other telemarketer out there. Unfortunately young girls have to pay for their greediness.
User's recommendation: Absolutely not. It screams fraudulent activity to obtain other people's money.

When I first got this in the mail I thought it was real-time I checked their socials and believed it because of all the pictures until I found all the bad reviews on here about the money and how they aren't truthful, and you don't win half the time, I was excited until I found out about the scam, if they lowered the price then they would get more customers and work better but yk that's just my opinion, I could've been Miss (my state) but no.

I wonder where did they get my address and the last name.
The mail looks totally like a scam, the simple web search proved me right.
Preferred solution: Stop sending unsolicited letters!
User's recommendation: Stay away
Sent me an unsolicited letter
Got sent a letter saying I (and also my nonexistent daughter, i guess they dont have a script for a candidate someone who is over 18???) have been nominated for some pagent bs. Im ugly af so Im not buying the whole specifically selected for a beauty pagent thing. Suffice to say me and my imaginary daughter who is also me will not be participating.
User's recommendation: Seems like a scam, if they’d send a letter to me they’d send it to anyone.
Other Reviews
I got a letter about the pageant and did not understand why it was sent to me. I tried to do some fact checking to make sure it wasn't a scam but found it difficult to find information.
Through their socials it looked real but when I tried to open the official page it was a scam page saying I won an Iphone.
I ten stumbled across this page and it helped me realize that it's a scam. It makes it seem like it's free but then cost way more than it should
User's recommendation: do research before signing up for things

They canceled the pageant during the pandemic. We paid registration fees and a talent fee.
The day the pageant was canceled my daughter paid the talent fee. NAM knew they were canceling the pageant and took several hundred dollars from a full time college freshman who was working 2 jobs to pay for school. I can understand losing the registration fee as this was paid much earlier and it was before the pandemic hit, but to take money knowing that the pageant is being canceled should be criminal. They are a SCAM and they are THIEVES.
I wouldn't want my daughter representing or being associated with a business who STEALS from their customers.
Disgusting behavior. Do not involve yourself with this shady pageant.AVOID

I've been a judge in over 50 pageants, for 12 different systems, in 8 different states. I have judged NAM numerous times for these very directors AND at nationals.
In fact I was supposed to judge the very pageant you are discussing but my daughter got COVID. She has been a state title holder. We were given the same criteria for judging as the contestants received in their handbooks. I was never given any directions or instructions on how to judge, score, or rank the final 5.
I would not judge a pageant multiple times if I thought anything dirty was going on. If a young lady trips or flubs an intro, a lot of time a judge will score how she handled the error rather than marking her down for an error. Remember also you do not see 30% of the score, which is interview. In Teen Miss USA this year, W.
Virginia actually fell in the pit during fitness. The way she handled it...I can pretty much guarantee why she made top 5. I have had 30 years in the pageant industry and am a well-known judge. National American Miss may be pricey and it is highly competitive.
As for ridiculous claims of girls who do optionals win, that is simply untrue. The overall panel of judges has absolutely no way of knowing which girls did or did not do optionals. In fact overall judges are kept separate from optional judges the entire time. They do take last minute entries and have since their inaugural pageant in 2003.
Don't badmouth a pageant due to sour grapes. If you haven't actually been on the other side of the judge's table AND somehow eavesdropped during interview, you have no clue.
A girl could get 5 perfect interview scores, mess up an intro and mathematically make it into top 5 EASILY. NAM...NOT A SCAN
